I dont know what to make of releasing the UVF. I figure whatever effect they have will take at least 2 or 3 days to be felt. Also what I suspect this is going to led to is a 'dirtier war' as we the UVF starting to take their frustrations out on civilians and either the regulars don't restrain them or worse they join in.
I suspect you´re right.
Didn´t we see something similar with regular British (Irish Protestant) troops already?
I seem to remember that on several occasions they did attack (Catholic) IRA units furiously and without regard to "proper" tactics.
That worked at the very beginning with some IRA groups then which didn´t have enough weapons and were isolated. It didn´t work that well later on.
It´s pretty certain that the UVF units will be even less trained. And probably will be less disciplined too.
A scenario is entirely possible where UVF units attack IRA units and get beaten back with high casualties. In that case I too can see frustrated UVF members, maybe even whole units, "take their frustration out on civilians".
Which probably will led to the long-term scenario you described.
Of course any massacres of Catholic Irish civilians will have foreign policy consequences too.
If either the Germans or that American reporter in Ireland report such a massacre, US President Wilson might have some political problems...
Catholic Spain and Italy might not like it either...
Not sure if it might even influence the (Catholic) Belgian king?
And I don´t think the "neutrals" in Scandinavia and the Netherlands will be happy.
So - like you - I do think the UVF will be a boon to the Germans and IRA.
Which is why I hope that some smart German foreign ministry or army guy realizes that they need to have some talks with Turkey.
Assuming the German embassy in Turkey reported those hints about an "Armenian plan" to Berlin?
