Well I dont think things are quite that bad, While the UVF will inflate the British numbers they will not have much in the way of heavy weaponry so a reasonably entrenched force should be able to handle large numbers of UVF troops. The best thing the British could do would be to rotate a few of the depleted divisions from Limerick and use them as cadre forces for the UVF. That would bring the British numbers up and the UVF green infantry would have experienced men backing them up and some heavy weapon support. While calling out the UVF will give the British access to over a division of troops I wonder what their activation will do to IRA recruitment.
