Posts: 2985 06/25/09 11:46:48 Administrator	I had wanted a relatively passive German offiicer that Mother Superior could manipulate. The Irish Brigade "Captains" are really senior NCOs and are disproportionately Bavarian. Suddenly I realized I had a role model. There already is a German convoy---the collection of liners that von Spee is escorting which are carrying copper and other contraband as well as Fenians and German reservists. The problem with convoys is that once detected none of them can stand up to either side's battle fleet (unless they can outrun them) which is why the RN cancelled the planned Mediterranean convoy once they learned that HSF was returning to Ireland. The trapped portion of First Army (4 ID, 6ID, 29ID and the Indian Corps) is in bad shape. Tom

Posts: 572 06/25/09 12:05:52	The problem for the British is two fold. 1) They don't send supplies and trapped Army and French get weaker and weaker. Nearly the same as if ships were sunk... 2) They send the stuff and risk it getting caught. The British have a much shorter distance to go and if they limit themelves to moving at night they should be able to get through. Michael Just my $0.02 worth

Posts: 94 06/25/09 22:10:40	If the Germans start catching coilers bound for France then they will be able to operate in the western approaches longer than if they are starved. One would think even a Frenchman would realize the critical importance of keeping the sea lanes open to the British war effort and indeed to it's very survival.

Posts: 2988 06/26/09 06:30:22 Administrator	I wasn't sure if you were arguing the broad point that convoys are the silver bullet to GB's problems everywhere (which they are not) and the more limited version that they needed to give French both the plural and the singular enough to survive. 10-4

Posts: 574 06/26/09 07:45:47	Unless the British resupply their troops and get some coal and other goods to the French they are in for a world of pain. I suspect that without such respupply the British forces will become totally combat ineffective and face collapse in the face of a determined attack. I agree that getting supplies won't make the world all roses but without them leads to defeat. Michael Just my $0.02 worth
