WI if the Germans use gas on the Normandy beaches ?

I can see that in most other areas of the war, the use of gas would have made no great difference other than to provide new ways to die and kill each other, but nothing of any strategic significance. But at the Normandy beaches, if the defenders had used gas, and especially if this had been kept secret from the Allies, was the capability there to make a great diference to the course of events ? Posts: 525 10/12/07 06:27:54	The Germans had a nasty weapon open to them, they could have dumped nerve agents on the beach. The allies had nothing to match it at this time and nerve agents would have made the beaches very deadly beyond the waterline for ANYONE to try to operate in. As they work on skin contact a gas mask would have been of limited help. One problem is the Germans had limited amounts and more than likely would have had them by the Pas de Calais. Also the allies would no doubt have gotten wind of the prep from Ultra and in responce used there own chemical weapons in reply. Michael Just my $0.02 worth

Posts: 36 10/20/07 16:01:51	The Germans supply was overwhelmingly by hore; chemical weapons use overall would have really hurt them, much more than the allies.

Posts: 930 10/22/07 01:42:00 ezOP	My only thoughts as to why this might have had a positive effect was on the basis that if the Germans could damage the invasion sufficiently to throw it back into the sea, whatever retaliation the Allies would have taken would still have to be seen in the light of whether or not they can get the will together to mount another invasion of Western Europe Best Regards Grey Wolf

Germany uses nerve gas in Normandy: - short term - maybe invasion fails - medium term - Allies bomb Germans with gas by the tonneload, probably German cities too - longer term - no difference apart from more dead Borys

Posts: 5 01/29/08 06:56:30	If they were able to release a significant amount of gas on the beaches and the wind was in the Germans favour then maybe you would see a much higher casualty rate then OTL. However, once the Germans have used all the gas on the allied invasion force, the allies are going to relase their gas reserves on the Germans. I don't know what the conseqeuences would be if the allies switch to gas instead of bombs but I do believe that the Germans will be in a very bad psotition. I think that gas is not a good thing to use in wa.r It's wrong and if you use it, you are the monster. I don't endorse gas in any war. Hypern.

Posts: 1 04/19/08 11:50:28	Well IMVHO the consequences may be the use of gas against German troops, and Bomber Command's next big raid may include gas as well as HE and incendiaries. Depending on how bad the gas casualties are on the Allied side there might be the use of Anthrax against German agriculture. There was some pressure to use CBW against Germany and this might push the situation towards their position.

Posts: 2 04/19/08 14:16:02	We also didn't contaminate Gruinard Island with anthrax for the fun of it; it was quarantined until 1990 (48 years!). WSC did suggest 'drenching' (to use his word) German cities with gas. We had also stockpiled anthrax infected cattle cake for dropping over Germany. We should also remember that if the Germans manage to delay the end of the war in Europe by a few months then Fat Man and Little Boy will be exploding over German cities rather than Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
