I was struck by a comment in Terrance Dicks' "Exodus" about how the Nuremburg ralleys seemed to get increasingly pseudo-religious with banners, torches, marches etc all aping religious practice, probably especially obvious to those of a Catholic tradition.

I'm not talking particuarly about the paganism aspect, harking back to so-called Teutonic religious practices, except as such things...

The Trent Affair blows up into war between Britain and the USA.

Thoughts?

1) The blockade would be impossible to maintain.

2) The RN would not be able to blockade the USA.

3) The British sent, what, 15,000 soldiers to Canada? Lincoln calls for 300,000 more volunteers, the Irish sign up in droves to kill Sassenach, and Canada is absorbed. Would that bring the Brit government down?

It just seemed very odd to me, looking through Papal lists that you get nine (or ten if you include one Pope-elect who predeceased himself) Stephens up to the mid eleventh century, then none at all in the millennium or so afterwards. Does anyone know why this is so ?

Development in cannon 1815 to 1848 ?

Can anyone tell me whether there were any major developments in cannon / field artillery in this period ?

For example, if an engineer built a fortified city designed to defend against the artillery of 1815, would it still be up to the job in 1848 or would weaknesses have crept in from developments that were unforeseen ?

Had range, trajectory, size of shot, type of shot etc developed much in that period ? And was it significant in more than statistical terms ?

While the figure of Hannibal is intriguing I have of late begun to wonder if the real turning point for Carthage was its failure to turn SYracuse into a vassal. From what I understand they came close to doing so. Is it possible POD that they did and assuming so am I right that this would change the whole complexion of their struggle with Rome.

Or am I merely showing that I know only enough Ancient history to make a foll out of myself.
