I was amazed with this book. It isn't by any means new, (1976) but is a goldmine of information on what Imperial Germany was thinking and why they did what they did when they did it. The book makes much more clear why the HSF came about, and shows just how close to war the US and Germany came before WWI.

It includes a lot of detail, but breaks it up sufficiently to allow one to get one's head around it, intersperses it with frequent maps (especially very useful in Southern Africa where all the tribes moved around, so the Ndbele are not in the same place from one war to the next !), useful illustrations, and frequent chapter breaks.
